Purpose of MCAT.

Problem-solving. Critical thinking. Knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social sciences. These are the qualities the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) seeks to assess.

Critical analysis and reasoning skills have always been essential to medical practice. The MCAT thus seeks to ensure medical students have the capacity to begin analysis of complex medical problems from their first day of medical school. In recent decades, the natural sciences have become more important to medical education, and this is reflected in the content of the MCAT.

Finally, the social determinants of health are well known to influence health outcomes. The MCAT therefore seeks to address the importance of the socio-cultural and behaviour determinants of health outcomes via assessing students in this subject area.

About MCAT.

The Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) is developed and delivered by the Association of American Medical Colleges to aid United States medical school admissions offices in selection of future medical students. While biomedical knowledge is important, there is much more to becoming an excellent doctor.

The  exam is a multiple-choice exam which assess knowledge of natural, behavioural, and social sciences.

The exam has four key sections:

  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills

Nearly all US and Canadian medical schools require students to complete MCAT as one of their admissions application components. Medical schools in Australia, and the Caribbean Islands also use the MCAT as means of admission to medical schools.

The MCAT is offered between 30-40 times per year, and can be taken a maximum of three times per year. The exam is held in over twenty countries. Visit the MCAT website for more information on testing centre locations.
